Can I continue to use contact lenses during the COVID-19 outbreak?

Two recent studies analyzing the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in tears have yielded negative results. Yu Jun et al8, analyzed the tears of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 and found no positive results of the virus in any of the samples. Xia et al9 found similar results in all the subjects analyzed except for one who had conjunctivitis, so the study authors speculate about the possibility of detecting the virus through conjunctival and lacrimal secretions in patients with conjunctivitis.

To our knowledge, no published scientific study contraindicates the use of contact lenses. It is recommend to apply rigorous hygiene and disinfection, both of the user's hands when putting or removing the lenses, and of the lenses, cases and accessories used. During use and maintenance, following the indications of ocular health professionals, and the instructions of the manufacturers of contact lenses and solutions.10 Avoid following sensational in character instructions found on the Internet or even recently shown on television as they may be inacurate and damage your eyes.
